Description
Sprains, strains, or other injuries to the ligaments and tendons that connect and support the kneecap can be caused suddenly or due to overuse of knees. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) connect the leg bones at the sides of the knee and stabilize side-to-side movements. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is the most commonly injured ligament of the knee, though isolated LCL injuries are rare.

MCL injuries can be graded from one to three:

  • Grade I – Mild injury, with minimally torn fibers and no loss of MCL integrity (1-3 weeks of rehab is needed)
  • Grade II – Moderate injury, with an incomplete tear and increased laxity of the MCL (3-6 weeks of rehab is needed)
  • Grade III – Severe injury, with a complete tear and gross laxity of the MCL (without surgery, up to 8 weeks of rehab is needed)
This workout is intended to guide the therapist and patients through rehabilitation for all MCL types. Remember that any intervention should be based on the individual's needs and consider a proper examination from a professional clinician.
